A Uniaxial Test Method for Structural Fatigue Strength of UHMWPE Acetabular Liners
ثبت نشده
چکیده
INTRODUCTION: There is a need for a structural fatigue test method applicable to UHMWPE acetabular liners. Yet, for these implants, there are currently no standards that specify a structural fatigue test such as those that exist for other implants. The aim of this work was to develop a simple and practical fatigue test method based on the most relevant techniques previously reported in the literature.

Thin-Walled Cross-Linked Acetabular Liners Need Not Exhibit Reduced Locking Strength.
Use of larger diameter femoral heads has emerged as a promising strategy to reduce the risk of dislocation after total hip arthroplasty, but thinning the walls of cross-linked ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) acetabular liners to accommodate these larger heads may compromise the locking mechanism of the liner. The purpose of this study was to test the mechanical integrity of th...
متن کاملMolecular chain stretch is a multiaxial failure criterion for conventional and highly crosslinked UHMWPE.
The development of accurate theoretical failure, fatigue, and wear models for ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is an important step towards better understanding the micromechanisms of the surface damage that occur in load bearing orthopaedic components and improving the lifetime of joint arthoplasties. Previous attempts to analytically predict the clinically observed damage, we...
متن کاملValidation of a micro-CT technique for measuring volumetric wear in retrieved acetabular liners.
In this study, a novel micro-CT-based technique for evaluating wear in retrieved acetabular liners was introduced and validated. Six UHMWPE acetabular components ranging in implantation time from 2.7 to 14.4 years were collected and evaluated with the use of a high-resolution micro-CT scanner. The components were scanned with a uniform volumetric resolution of 74 microns (16-bit precision) with...
متن کاملCorrelation Between In Vivo Oxidation and Mechanical Properties In Contemporary Polyethylene Bearings
Introduction: Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene oxidation remains an important concern in total joint arthroplasty, since it eventually results in a significant drop in mechanical properties that may compromise implant longevity, especially for TKA [1-3]. In vivo oxidation of polyethylene can occur in the presence of unstabilized macroradicals within the polymer and molecular oxygen upta...
متن کاملOptimization simulated injection molding process for ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene nanocomposite hip liner using response surface methodology and simulation of mechanical behavior.
In this study, injection molding process of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) reinforced with nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) was simulated and optimized through minimizing the shrinkage and warpage of the hip liners as an essential part of a hip prosthesis. Fractional factorial design (FFD) was applied to the design of the experiment, modeling, and optimizing the shrinkage and warpage...
